Dr. Arup Chakrabarti is a senior consultant and managing partner at the Chakrabarti Eye Care Centre, Trivandrum. He completed his graduation and post-graduation from the prestigious Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry in 1990. He was a fellow in IOL and Anterior Segment Microsurgery at the Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai (1991-1992) and continued his tenure as a Senior Consultant. He has also worked as assistant professor and then associate professor affiliated to the Dr M G R Medical University. After an 8 year stint at Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai he relocated to Kerala and started his tertiary care referral centre in Trivandrum.

Dr. Chakrabarti’s areas of special interest in Ophthalmology are primarily in cataract surgery with an abiding interest in Glaucoma. He lectures extensively and gives live surgery demonstrations in various parts of India. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and an International coordinator for All India Ophthalmic Society (AIOS).

Phacoemulsification in Complex Situation: He has been a phaco surgeon close to 2 decades and his main focus is in performing phacoemulsification in challenging situations. He has numerous presentations and videos on these extremely complex situations. His video on phaco in white mature cataracts had won a BPOS award almost 2 decades ago. He is especially interested in Cataract surgery in eyes with posterior segment diseases and has also conducted various courses at the AIOS, ASCRS, ESCRS, AAO and the APAO on this topic.

Role in the Early Promotion of Manual Non Phaco Small Incision Cataract Surgery (Manual SICS): He was one of the first surgeons to popularize the technique of Manual Non Phaco Small Incision Cataract Surgery (Manual SICS) in South India. He performed the first live surgery demonstration of the technique in South India at the Annual meeting of the Tamil Nadu Ophthalmic Association in 1994 at Madurai and subsequently at various conferences in the India. He regularly participates as an instructor in the SICS/ECCE skills transfer programmes at the AAO and ASCRS. He also teaches this technique in an instruction course on this topic at the AAO.

Role as a Trainer in Phacoemulsification: A teacher par excellence, he has personally trained over 500 ophthalmologists on various aspects of cataract surgery.

He has been conducting instruction courses as chief instructor and participating as co-instructor on a regular basis in various prestigious meetings such as –

The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Conference (ASCRS), European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons conference (ESCRS), American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), All India Ophthalmic  Society (AIOS) etc.

He has brought out teaching videos in various aspects of phacoemulsification and its complications which have been found very useful by ophthalmologists in India and elsewhere. He has also edited a textbook on “Cataract Surgery In The Diseased Eye”(Jaypee 2013) and is in the process of publishing his 2nd text book on “Posterior Capsular Rupture” (Springer 2015).

Dr. Chakrabarti has been awarded Achievement Award both by the AAO and APAO. He has also received many named oration awards and best paper of the session award. He is the executive committee member of the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India (IIRSI). He served AIOS in the capacity of member scientific committee for a period of 6 years (2 terms) and his state society  as a chairman scientific committee.
